IFP MN staff regularly meets with members to discuss various aspects of their projects. Topics include script, fundraising, marketing, screenings, production, technical advice, business start-ups and other angles unique to each project.

These meetings are free and open to IFP MN membership only. IFP MN members call the specific staff person they wish to meet with and set up an appointment. Meetings usually last one hour.

IFP MN staff has found that these meetings are generally very useful for the filmmaker or photographer. Especially in terms of steps or directions to take a project to the next level. There are times, however, when IFP MN staff meet numerous hours with a member, or, are stymied along with the person they are trying to assist. On these occasions, IFP MN turns to the “IFP MN Consultations Program.”

Here’s how it works:

A fee for service, IFP MN members can have exclusive access to a consultant in the area that assistance is needed. IFP MN currently has four consultants on its regular roster, with the capability of seeking out more if it’s in a new area of expertise. We will add more, based on membership needs and requests. The consultants and their areas of expertise are:

1. Melody Gilbert: Documentary production, story development and story structure, fundraising, film festivals and markets, sales reps and distribution, international industry contacts, co-productions, and overall doc project management.

2. Christopher Mick: Technical production–format choice, equipment, general lighting concerns, scheduling and crew.

3. Jila Nikpay: Budgeting and scheduling, grant writing, publishing of photographic books, working with the media.

4. Mark Rosen: Distribution, Marketing, Contracts, Financing, Industry contacts, and Job Placement Assistance.

The fee for this consultation is below market rate at an extremely reasonable $50/hour, with the first half-hour free. If you are hitting a wall in terms of contacts, resources, agreements, production schedule, technical aspects of your project or distribution, this route is highly recommended.

To make an appointment, just follow these easy steps:
1. Contact your consultant choice to let him or her know you’re interested in a consult. Include information about your project or the topic of your consultation.

Jila Nikpay: jn@jilanikpay.com
Mark Rosen: mrosentv@msn.com
Melody Gilbert: melody@frozenfeetfilms.com
Christopher Mick: cmick@ifpmn.org

2. Then, call or email Paul Clark at the IFP MN office at (651) 644-1912 or pclark@ifpmn.org to set up an appointment to meet with your consultant. We ask that you prepay for your consultation with credit card or by check. If you are not a member of IFP MN, you can sign up at this time. Paul will confirm your meeting by email.

3. Bring materials related to your project to the meeting, including script, treatment, budget, trailer, confirmed personnel or cast….anything that may be helpful in understanding the subject matter.

4. Feedback - do let us know if this is a helpful program for you!
